Objective

On completion of the course the student can communicate in English in educational and professional contexts related to civil engineering, and give presentations in English.
The student can find information related to the field from English sources and use this information critically.
The student can read texts related to the professional field and use most common field related vocabulary.
The student can analyse a communicative situation and communicate accordingly.
He or she is able to operate in multicultural environments taking into account the special features of each communicative situation and the cultural and linguistic background of the other participants.
The student can use English to further professional development.
The student has a realistic understanding of his/her linguistic and communicative skills, and is motivated to develop them as part of his/her professional competence.
The oral and written communication skills comply with the level B2 in accordance with the European Framework of Reference for Foreign Languages.

Content

1. Oral skills and improving professional oral communication
2. Textual conventions of the professional field, common documents, and improving written English
3. Professional communication on the Internet.
4. Typical interactive situations for a civil engineer: communicating individually, in pairs and in groups
5. Becoming familiar with typical texts, text types and vocabulary used in the professional field
6. Finding information in English sources and evaluating sources critically
7. Using English sources and referring to them in one's own texts or oral presentations
8. Communicating about education, organisations, work environment and tasks typical for civil engineering
9. Job applications and interviews in the professional field
10. Self-evaluation of language and communication skills, and development of learning strategies.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

In communicative situations related to his/her field, the student
- manages using questions and relatively short speech acts
- understands others sufficiently to act appropriately
- expresses his/her thoughts with simple linguistic structures and mainly coherently and understandably, even though there are deficiencies in professional terminology and structural inaccuracies which may interfere with full understanding
- knows professional terminology although there are deficiencies in using it
- pronounces English sufficiently well to be understandable, even though there are errors
- produces simple professional texts independently using a model, and longer texts using different aids, but linguistic errors partly interfere with understanding.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In communicative situations related to his/her field, the student
- manages well enough to fulfil the objectives set for the task
- can take the initiative in professional discourse and can, to some degree, take into account participants’ cultural and language backgrounds and the demands of the context
- expresses him or herself clearly and almost without errors
- uses professional terminology rather well
- pronounces English sufficiently clearly to be understood
- can produce texts for different purposes, and linguistic inaccuracy does not interfere with understanding.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In communicative situations related to his/her field, the student
- participates actively following the discourse practices of the field
- takes initiative also in demanding professional communication situations taking into account the cultural and linguistic background of other participants
- expresses him or herself efficiently, fluently and precisely, and almost without errors
- uses professional terminology correctly
- pronounces English clearly, with stress and rhythm facilitating the understanding of the message
- can produce texts in several genres, which are clear, well structured, and almost without errors.

In communicative situations related to his/her field, the student
- manages using questions and relatively short speech acts
- understands others sufficiently to act appropriately
- expresses his/her thoughts with simple linguistic structures and mainly coherently and understandably, even though there are deficiencies in professional terminology and structural inaccuracies which may interfere with full understanding
- knows professional terminology although there are deficiencies in using it
- pronounces English sufficiently well to be understandable, even though there are errors
