Objective

The aim of the course is to familiarise the student with the field of study and his or her future profession. The aim is to enhance effective study skills and introduce the student to the principles of collaborative learning. The student develops group working skills and self-directed learning skills.
In addition, the aim of the course is to illustrate the importance of ethical considerations both in studies and working life (professional ethics).

Content

Familiarising oneself with the field of study and profession. On completion of the course the student will

- be aware of different career opportunities
- be familiar with the structure of the curriculum and know how he or she can plan his or her studies
- understand what topics are covered in the different major subject options and know what opportunities are offered by personal study guidance and the recognition of prior learning
- be familiar with main companies, organisations and other agents in the field and understand how they operate
- be able to name research institutes in the field, know important publications and web sites and follow news in the field
- be familiar with most important rules and regulations in the field, such as occupational safety regulations and labour legislation
- know how to apply for jobs and what to pay attention to when making employment contracts or contracts related to practical training
- be able to summarise options for studying abroad and practical training
- understand the international dimension of the field and how to develop skills related to international co-operation during studies an in working life
- know well the physical and social study environment.
- be able to recognize his or her strengths and development targets and know how to develop self-regulation skills especially in the context of studying and learning
- know the principles of collaborative learning and know how to work effectively in small groups or pairs
- know how to use the most important software programs in their study tasks (e.g. Microsoft Office)
- be able to use central online tools of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, such as the intranet, the timetable application and learning platforms, e.g. Moodle
- know the key guidelines, rules and study practices in place at Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and be ready to abide by them
- be familiar with the student services, such as the Student Affairs' Office and Student Well-Being Services, and know how to find services offered by the student association Metka
- be familiar with library services, information management systems and key information systems relevant to the field of study.

Assessment is based on criteria Passed/Failed. Mark will not be given.

The student has acquired the knowledge listed in the learning outcomes and has completed course exercises.
Completing the course with a pass grade requires active participation and doing all the exercises according to the course plan.
The course implementation plan describes the requirements for a pass grade in more detail.
