Objective

Student can use communication and Swedish language both in architectural studies and construction architect´s profession.
Student is able to work in all situations of interaction in his/her studies, like group works.
Upon completion the student recognises different working life communication situations.
He/she understands the importance of interpersonal communication and job atmosphere for working motivation. The student knows the practices of team work and masters the basics of project communication. He/she takes into account the requirements of the recipient, situation and each branch and is able to communicate in an analysed, understandable and convincing way. The student is willing to develop his/her Finnish and communication skills as part of his/her professional ability.
The students acquire the written and oral language skills in the second domestic language that are necessary in their professional field, as required by national legislation (Code of Statues about University of Applied Sciences 352/2003 8§).
The students are able to communicate in Swedish in professional contexts both in Finland and in the other Nordic countries, taking into account the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the communication partners.
The students acquire oral and written language and communication skills that are at least at the B1 level as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. They learn to seek information related to their own professional field in various sources and convey information both orally and in writing.
During their studies, the students form a positive and realistic view of their language and communicative competence as well as skills and motivation to develop it further.

Content

The course combines competences of construction architecture and communication and language studies. The theme of the studies will be found in the course implementation plan.
Basic communication situations in studies and working life:
- teamwork skills
-exploration and analysis of one's skills in interpersonal communication situations
-negotiation and meeting practices, conflict situations
-customer community
-project work and team work
-basics of internal and external information
-professional literacy, media monitoring and designing hand-outs
-argumentation skills
-writing, presenting and visualizing one's own expert texts
The course content of Swedish studies will be tailored according to each degree programme. The contents of the course focus on field-specific oral and written exercises related to the following themes:
- self-assessing one’s language and communication skills and developing learning strategies
- education and career planning
- organisations, working environments, tasks, processes and tools
- field-related texts; increasing and activating the knowledge of technical terminology
- key interactive communication situations: individual and group communication.

Student workload

Obtaining a mark of the course requires 80% participation in classroom instruction and guidance, etc.
Student´s workload is 27 h / ects, which includes contact teaching and independent work of the student.
Studies and the working load of the rehearsals are sized as per the all-time studies.
Obtaining a mark of the course requires that all course assignments are done satisfactorily.
If the course has a preliminary exam, it must be passed before student will start the course.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

To pass the course the student must fulfil the requirements specified in each course implementation.
The student can identify some typical features of his/her own communication the basis of instructions and feedback. He/she can identify the components of a communication process. The student participates in interactive situations, and receives and gives feedback. He/she recognizes the characteristics of interactions within different situations.
The student writes messages according to instructions, retrieves information in guidance and is able to use it for his/her own output.
In field-specific communication situations in Swedish the student:
• Manages in the most common general and specialised professional communication situations
• Composes simple, partly incoherent texts. Language errors may impair understanding but do not prevent the delivery of the message
• Participates in simple spoken interaction but often needs help from the conversation partner
• Uses basic general and technical terminology of his/her own field; inaccuracy and the influence of other languages may interfere with the delivery of the message. Uses basic grammatical structures in a repetitious and partly incorrect manner
• Pronounces in a mainly comprehensible manner, although the pronunciation deviates from the target language. The slow sentence rhythm makes it difficult to estimate if the message is delivered

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student can evaluate his/her own communication skills and form communicative development
goals. The student is goal-oriented in interactive situations and is familiar with the role of internal and external communication of the community. He/she listens, observes and interprets messages appropriately.
The student communicates as an expert in a structured, understandable and interesting way and targets his/her messages to the recipient according to the situation. The student can justify his/her views. The student can acquire information on his/her own field of study and can use it critically. The student is able to prepare a goal-oriented written, oral or visual presentation for a target audience. The student takes advantage of his/her knowledge on text types and language.
In field-specific communication situations in Swedish the student:
• Manages relatively well in daily general and specialised professional discourse
• Composes coherent texts that successfully communicate the intended meaning
• Takes initiative in familiar professional communication situations
• Uses general and basic technical terminology of his/her own field relatively well. Lapses may occur in the choice of words or grammatical structures, but these do not cause misunderstanding
• Pronounces in a comprehensible manner. Pauses in the sentence rhythm do not cause
misunderstanding.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is willing and able to develop his/her language and communication skills as a part of his/her expertise and is able to communicate in a meaningful, creative and personal way. The student can use means of communication in a creative and appropriate way, and takes advantage of different channels and tools. The student argues his/her point with skill and shows, shares and develops his/her expertise in the community.
The student retrieves information independently and competently in order to produce new knowledge or new perspectives. The student uses language creatively and according to field practices.
In field-specific communication situations in Swedish the student:
• Masters varied and demanding general and specialised professional communication situations
• Produces clear and detailed texts appropriate for the situation
• Is an active participant in professional communication situations and allows for the requirements of the situation. Speaks fluently and effortlessly and takes the conversation partner in account
• Uses technical and general terminology as well as grammatical structures diversely and almost without errors
• Pronounces clearly, with a natural sentence rhythm.

Qualifications

The acquisition of professional language and communication competence in the second domestic language (Swedish) requires the starting level B1.1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The student's oral and written communication skills correspond to the skills which are required for the public administration personnel. (Decreed by Finnish legislation 424/2003, 6 §). Evaluation is good or satisfactory (4-5 = good and 1-3 = satisfactory).
