Objective

On completion of the course the student can
- explain the most important definitions of renovation, the process flow for repair work, and the difference between renovation and new construction
- list building materials and structures from different time periods
- explain the importance of protecting buildings to preserve architectural heritage and list existing methods for doing this
- list the contents of renovation plans
- determine condition assessment methods for buildings and estimate the timing of assessments of a building during the repair process
- list typical damages, defects and their causes in buildings from different time periods
- name different methods for condition assessment and repair of concrete, wood, rendered and brick structures
- list demolition techniques for repair work
- list harmful and hazardous substances as well as building materials in older buildings and their demolition techniques
- list corrosion protection methods for reinforced concrete structures
- list causes for moisture and mould damage in structures and methods of investigating such damages and repairing them
- list typical indoor air problems and their causes as well as methods for investigating them and repairing them
- list problems related to the construction of lifts.
