Objective

On completion of the course, the student can:
• identify axial stress
• identify shear stress
• identify bending stress
• describe deformations
• repeat displacement
• repeat dimensioning of beams and columns
• explain the buckling of a compressed member
• explain the design of a compressed member.
On completion of the course the student is expected to at least be able to assess the time and moisture dependent functioning of a timber structure, explain the fire technical design of a timber structure, list main uses and applications of timber structures, determine the ULS load combinations for a structure and based on it design a simple timber member subjected to bending and/or axial force and design a nailed joint.

Content

Basic assumptions of the theory and mechanical properties of materials
