Objective

Students are able to operate in communication and interaction situations during their studies and working life. They are able to produce texts related to their field of expertise for different channels. Students are able to communicate as experts in various duties. They are able to research and assess information in a critical manner as well as use it in an objective manner. Students have a good command of good written and oral communication practices, and they are able to apply them appropriately. Students are able to utilise their linguistic and communication skills for the continuous development of ideas and expertise.

The student knows how to communicate in a fluent and effective manner in English for study and work assignments in their field of expertise both in Finland and abroad and is able to use English for the purpose of developing their own professional skills. The student can obtain information needed in their field of expertise from different sources and is able to process and convey it in writing and orally. The student has a realistic idea of their own linguistic and communication skills and has a positive attitude towards its development as part of their professional skills.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Under guidance, the student is able to use and produce different types of oral and written texts in professional expert work. The student obtains information from professional sources and utilises the obtained information in both studies and work assignments. The student knows how to operate in communication situations of expert work as well as research and development work.

Professional English: In communication situations related to the student’s field of expertise, the student trusts their own communication skills in professional linguistic situations with the help of specifying questions and short speeches. The student understands the communication of a discussion partner in such a way that the student is able to act on the basis of such communication. The student can express their thoughts in a simple manner and partly in a uniform manner as well as reasonably understandably, even if the student is lacking in the professional special language and there are linguistic errors that weaken the conveyance of a message. The student can independently create simple texts of predetermined format as well as more comprehensive texts with the help of linguistic aids.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to independently use and produce different types of oral and written texts in professional expert work. The student can diversely search for information from professional sources and is able to assess the reliability and usability of the information in his/her studies and work duties. The student knows how to operate constructively in communication situations of expert work as well as research and development work.

Professional English: In communication situations related to the student’s field of expertise, the student trusts their communication skills in such a way that the student can cope in linguistic situations in accordance with the objectives of the professional task. The student can share thoughts as an equal partner with an individual language user, communicates at their own self initiative in professional linguistic situations while considering to some extent
the linguistic and cultural backgrounds of the participants, as well as the requirements of the situation. The student can express one’s self without delay in a clear and detailed manner, and accurately uses professional vocabulary. The student can pronounce English clearly in such a way that the overall message is conveyed, and the student can produce texts for different purposes in which the linguistic shortcomings do not prevent the message from being conveyed.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to objectively use and produce different types of oral and written texts in professional expert work. The student can diversely search for information from professional sources and is able to critically assess the reliability and usability of the information in his/her studies and work duties. The student knows how to operate as a group member and leader in communication situations of expert work as well as research and development work. The student shows the will to want to develop his/her expert communication and interaction skills.

Professional English: In communication situations related to their field the students trust their communications skills to allow them to take initiative in communication events following the discourse practice of the field. The student interacts clearly and fluently as an equal partner with a proficient speaker and takes initiative also in demanding professional communications where participants’ cultural and language backgrounds need to be taken into account. The student expresses themselves effectively and accurately, uses professional terminology accurately. The student pronounces English clearly, with stress and rhythm matching the total message and has the ability to produce several genres, which are clear, well structured, and effective.
