Objective

Learning outcomes

Professional communication in Finnish:
The students are able to use Finnish appropriately in communication and interaction situations in studies and work life. The students are able to produce text types in their field for different channels. The students are able to utilise their language and communication skills to continuously develop their thinking and expertise. The students are able to search for and evaluate information critically and use it in a goal-oriented manner.

Professional Communication in English
Students are able to communicate fluently and effectively in English in multilingual study and working life assignments in their field, and able to use English to practice and develop their professional skills. Students are able to act in a natural manner in multicultural environments, taking into account specific characteristics of communication situations and other speakers' cultural and linguistic circumstances. Students are able to obtain information required in their professional field from various sources and to process and communicate about it in writing and orally, conveying the message accurately by using specific professional vocabulary. Students have a realistic perception of their language and communication skills, and take a positive approach to developing them as part of their professional skills.

Professional Communication in Finnish (2 ECTS)
- Communication in work communities and with clients
- Expert textual skills and producing professional texts
- Ethical and critical use of sources and notation
- Presentation skills, influencing by speaking and giving and receiving feedback

Professional Communication in English (3 ECTS)
• The field's key international interaction situations in domestic and foreign contexts: communication in English individually and in a group
• Key professional concepts and terms used in typical texts of the field; use and application of English-language source material in professional contexts
• The professional field's text conventions and text types
• Information acquisition, processing, application and dissemination and the application of scientific
data in a foreign language
• Professional organisations, work environments, duties, processes and methods
• Training and career planning in the respective professional field
• Self-assessment of language and communication skills, and development of individual learning strategies

Professional communication in Finnish
The students are able to use and produce the oral and written text types needed for professional expert work. The students are able to search for information from professional sources and utilize the information acquired in the studies and duties. The students are able to work in communication situations for expert work as well as research and development work.

Professional communication in English
In communication situations related to their professional field, students trust their communication skills enough to manage professional language use situations by asking clarifying questions and with the help of their own short statements. Students are able to understand other speakers’ communication in order to act appropriately. Students express their thoughts in a simple way and, for the most part, coherently and reasonably understandably despite shortcomings in professional language and grammatical errors that make it difficult for the message to get across. Students can produce simple texts of a specific format independently, and longer texts by means of language tools.

Professional communication in Finnish
The students are able to independently use and produce the oral and written text types needed for professional expert work. The students are able to search for a wide range of information from professional sources and assess the reliability and usefulness of the information in their studies and work assignments. The students are able to work constructively in the communication situations of expert work as well as research and development work.

Professional communication in English
In communication situations related to their professional field, students trust their communication skills enough to manage language situations in the field, as expected from a professional. Students exchange ideas on an equal basis with a proficient language user, and take the initiative to communicate in professional language use situations, taking to some extent into account other participants' language and cultural backgrounds and contextual demands. Students express themselves without delay, clearly and in detail, using professional vocabulary in an accurate manner. Students pronounce English clearly so that the overall message is conveyed, and produce texts for different purposes so that their occasional linguistic shortcomings do not prevent the message from getting across.

The students are able to search for a wide range of information from professional sources and critically assess the reliability and usability of the information in their studies and work assignments. The students are able to act as members and leaders of the group in the communication situations in expert work as well as research and development. The students show a willingness to develop expert communication and interaction skills.

Professional communication in English
In communication situations related to their professional field, students trust their communication skills so that they actively take part in different language use situations, following the conventions of various communication situations in the field. Students exchange ideas clearly and fluently on an equal basis with a proficient language user, and actively communicate also in demanding professional language use situations, taking into account the other participants' language and cultural backgrounds. Students express themselves effectively and accurately, using demanding professional vocabulary correctly. Students pronounce English clearly with natural emphasis and rhythm so that the overall message is strengthened, and produce clear, well-structured and effective texts of various text types.
