Objective

Students know how to describe health promotion as a socially multidimensional and diverse phenomenon as well as a continuous process providing people with possibilities for increasing and improving control of their health. Students are able to provide their clients education on nutrition supporting healthy lifestyle. Students can integrate holistic view of human beings and osteopathic principles as a part of a professional activity. They are familiar with the current nutritional recommendations and the current care recommendations on various illnesses in relation to nutrition as well as the national and international recommendations and their background. Students are able to give constructive, effective and realistic advice to individual patients to support their healthy lifestyle.
Students know how to explain the health effects of physical exercise and justify the significance of exercise to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of illnesses. Students are able to provide education and guidance on physical exercise to prevent and treat illnesses.
Clinical psychology: 1 cr
After completing the study unit, students understand the modern concept of mental health and mental capacity as well as comprehend the significance of mental resources to human adaptation and wellbeing. They recognise clients’ traumatic crisis and symptoms of mental problems, know how to apply support systems to their clients’ needs in these situations and refer clients to mental health services if required. Students have the competence to good encountering of clients with mental health problems and psychosomatic symptoms.

Content

National and international recommendations related to health promotion. Basics of nutrition. National and international nutritional recommendations. The significance of sleep and rest. The effect of stress to the health. Physical exercise and illnesses. Measures of precaution for doing sports. Significance and effects of physical exercise during different phases of life. National health exercise recommendation.
Clinical psychology 1 cr
Mental health, traumatic crisis and mental resources. Clients with mental problems: recognising most common mental health disorders, preventative mental health care and referring to treatment. Psychosomatics: relation between the body and mind, differential diagnosis of somatic and psychosomatic pain as well as somatoform symptoms.

Developmental psychology (pass H/fail 0) 1 ECTS credit: active participation in contact teaching (continuous assessment), a written reflective learning assignment, panel discussion 100%.
