Objective

Students understand the clinical process of osteopathy holistically. Observing more experienced osteopathy students’ and osteopaths’ work with patients. They carry out tasks at the reception of Positia. Students show they are capable of teamwork in the clinical environment and know how to assess their own development.
Basics of psychology and basis for therapeutic competence: 1 cr
After completing the study unit, students are able to define psychological phenomena and consider basic principles of therapeutic approach to their work. They realise the significance of their own personality to interaction. Students are able to conduct a motivating interview and capable of interaction as well as give reflection of client service from an ethical viewpoint. They learn to establish the limits of their professional expertise and wellbeing at work.
Swedish 3 cr
The students acquire the written and oral language skills in the second domestic language that are necessary in their professional field, as required by national legislation (352/2003 8§).
The students are able to communicate in Swedish in professional contexts both in Finland and in the other Nordic countries, taking into account the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the communication partners.
The students acquire oral and written language and communication skills that are at least at the B1 level as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. They learn to seek information related to their own professional field invarious sources and convey information both orally and in writing.
During their studies, the students form a positive and realistic view of their language and communicative competence as well as skills and motivation to develop it further.

Content

Acquainting with Positia learning unit. Observing more experienced osteopathy students’ and osteopaths’ work with patients. Progress in clinical practice and organisation of the learning clinic. Visit as a patient. Confidentiality, ethical and collegial conduct, data protection, etiquette and hygiene. Evaluation of experiences and learning outcomes as well as reflection by means of a learning diary.
Basics of psychology and basis for therapeutic competence: 1 cr
Helping other people by using own personality as a tool. Motivating interview and interaction. Psychological phenomena, basic principles, ethical questions and own wellbeing in therapeutic interaction.
Swedish 3 cr
The contents of the course focus on field-specific oral and written exercises related to the following themes:
- self-assessing one’s language and communication skills and developing learning strategies
- education and career planning
- organisations, working environments, tasks, processes and tools
- field-related texts; increasing and activating the knowledge of technical terminology
- key interactive communication situations: individual and group communication.

The tuition for the Swedish course will take place during the first period.

Introduction to psychology and basic therapeutic skills: literature will be announced in the beginning of contact teaching and beforehand at Oma- course workspace.

Introduction to psychology and basic therapeutic skills: a written reflective learning assignment, a failed assignment must be complemented within one month by request of the lecturer.

Students use the appropriate core concepts as well as make choices using the knowledge base of their own professional field. They recognise the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions.
In the professional field specific communication situations, the students:
- manage the most common situations at work and field specific language use.
- can write simple, partly incoherent text. Errors can make the text difficult to understand, but they do not prevent the delivery of the message.
- participate in simple interaction but often need conversational help from the peers.
- use normal and general vocabulary related to their field; inaccuracy and the influence of other languages may prevent the delivery of the message. - they use basic grammatical structures unilaterally and somewhat incorrectly.
- pronunciation mainly understandable, even if the pronunciation is different from the target language and the slow sentence rhythm complicates the assessment.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students analyse the relationships between appropriate core concepts as well as justify their choices using the knowledge base of their own professional field. They analyse the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions.
In the professional field specific communication situations, the students:
- manage reasonably well in the everyday general and field-specific communication situations.
- can write a coherent text, in which the message is communicated.
- takes a part in the familiar situations in the field.
- is able to use general basic vocabulary in the field relatively well. Incorrect structures and choices of words may appear but they do not prevent communication.
- pronunciation is understandable. Breaks in the sentence rhythm do not interfere with understanding the message.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students analyse and assess the relationships between appropriate core concepts as well as make choices using the knowledge base of their own professional field. They assess the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions.
In the professional field specific communication situations, the students:
- Master varied and demanding general field-specific situations.
- Can write good and detailed text appropriately.
- Are actively involved in the professional communication situations. The speech is smooth and effortless and the recipient is taken into account.
- Use general terminology widely and structures almost free of errors.
- Pronunciation is clear, the sentence rhythm is natural.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Students use the appropriate core concepts as well as make choices using the knowledge base of their own professional field. They recognise the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions.
In the professional field specific communication situations, the students:
- manage the most common situations at work and field specific language use.
- can write simple, partly incoherent text. Errors can make the text difficult to understand, but they do not prevent the delivery of the message.
