Objective

Students
- are familiar with the objectives and operating environment of Finnish maternity care, client’s care path and regulations on reproductive health.
- are able to describe low-risk pregnancy and the progress of physiological childbirth as well as detect any abnormalities in them.
- are able to manage the follow-up of normal pregnancy and childbirth independently as well as monitor the wellbeing of foetus.
- are able to support parents expecting a child in their growth to parenthood, their relationship as a couple, care of the newborn baby and breastfeeding by means of family and antenatal counselling.
- are familiar with convalescence after normal childbirth and can describe the content and objectives of the postpartum examination.
- identify ethical and cultural perspectives related to pregnancy and childbirth.

Content

Objectives and operating environment of maternity care in Finland, client’s care path and regulations related to reproductive health
Low-risk pregnancy
Follow-up of the wellbeing of mother, foetus and family as well as recommendations during pregnancy and childbirth
Normal childbirth and midwifery skills related to it
Interaction promoting resources of pregnant mothers, mothers giving birth and families, parent-child relationship and positive childbirth experience
Family and antenatal education, parenthood
Postnatal examination in accordance with the Health Insurance Act (1224/2004)
Social, community-based and cultural factors related to midwifery skills of individuals, women and families
Expert lectures on embryology
