Objective

Students are able to describe the significance of an individual’s background, build and activities and participation as well as that of the environment to development and prevention of musculoskeletal problems from the perspective of podiatry. Students identify the most common musculoskeletal diseases and are able to describe the pathogenic mechanisms of these. Students gain practice treating lower extremity problems of people with musculoskeletal conditions and counselling their care. Students gain practice in multidisciplinary co-operation with parties involved in caring for musculoskeletal patients.

Students are familiar with the most common classification systems used in podiatry. They know how to apply them to making podiatric diagnosis and podiatric plans as well as describe various dysfunctions/deformities of the feet based on them.

Students are able to mobilise joints of the lower limbs with correct movements and techniques and describe the application areas of mobilisation. They know how to apply mobilisation as part of the podiatric treatment and assess the effectiveness of foot care.

The students acquire the written and oral language skills in the second domestic language that are necessary in their professional field, as required by national legislation (352/2003 8§). The students are able to communicate in Swedish in professional contexts both in Finland and in the other Nordic countries, taking into account the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the communication partners. The students acquire oral and written language and communication skills that are at least at the B1 level as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. They learn to seek information related to their own professional field in various sources and convey information both orally and in writing. During their studies, the students form a positive and realistic view of their language and communicative competence as well as skills and motivation to develop it further.

The course of Finnish as a second language is obligatory for the students of Degree Programmes whose language of school education is not Finnish and who have been exempted from Swedish studies.
