Objective
Students deepen their competence in process planning and implementation of prosthetic and orthotic services. Students become acquainted with the digital work environments of prosthetics and orthotics and identify various methods and management programs used in the work environment. Students have an innovative and problem-oriented approach to their work. The students acquire language skills governed by national legislation (352/2003 8§) required for both written and oral communication in Swedish in their professional duties.
Students will be able to communicate in the professional environment both in Finland and in other Nordic countries. They are able to take into account cultural and linguistic aspects in their communication. The minimum level for the written and spoken communication skills is classified as "B1" in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students learn to seek information from various sources and deliver both written and spoken information proficiently.
Content
•Service plan in prosthetics and orthotics.
•Established measurement techniques and assessment methods of the field.
•Product development processes.
•Management programs for operational actions, clients, orders and stock.
•Recycling and lending of prosthetic and orthotic products.
•The course content of Swedish at work will be tailored according to each degree programme or line of specialization.
•Each field of study has its own central oral and written exercises:
- self-assessment on linguistic and communication skills and development of learning strategies
- education and career
- organizations, work environments, work tasks, work processes and instruments
- professional texts, increasing and activating professional terminology
- key interactive communication situations: individual and group communication

Students master professional concepts, and they justify their choices using the comprehensive knowledge base, based on the client’s needs. Students assess systematically the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions. Students act independently and professionally aiming at goals set to them in their operating environment as well as apply working methods appropriately and safely. Students work according to professional ethics as well as commit themselves to the group, enhancing its functioning.
In communication situations related to his/her field the student
• Manages in the most common general and specialised professional communication situations
• Composes simple, partly incoherent texts. Language errors may impair understanding but do not prevent the delivery of the message
• Participates in simple spoken interaction but often needs help from the conversation partner
• Uses basic general and technical terminology of his/her own field; inaccuracy and the influence of other languages may interfere with the delivery of the message. Uses basic grammatical structures in a repetitious and partly incorrect manner
• Pronounces in a mainly comprehensible manner, although the pronunciation deviates from the target language. The slow sentence rhythm makes it difficult to estimate if the message is delivered
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Students master professional concepts and make choices together with the client using the comprehensive knowledge base. They also assess and develop their own functioning systematically. Students act independently and professionally aiming at goals set to them in their operating environment. They also apply working methods flexibly and safely. Students work according to professional ethics considering the characteristics of various situations, and in their work they commit themselves to the code of professional conduct.
In communication situations related to his/her field the student
• Manages relatively well in daily general and specialised professional discourse
• Composes coherent texts that successfully communicate the intended meaning
• Takes initiative in familiar professional communication situations
• Uses general and basic technical terminology of his/her own field relatively well. Lapses may occur in the choice of words or grammatical structures, but these do not cause misunderstanding
• Pronounces in a comprehensible manner. Pauses in the sentence rhythm do not cause misunderstanding.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Students master professional concepts and make choices together with the client using the comprehensive knowledge base, in changing environments. They also assess their own functioning and produce knowledge to develop their operating environment. Students act independently and professionally and develop their working and operating environments together with other actors. Students work according to professional ethics considering the characteristics of complex and unpredictable situations. Their work develops and renews professional procedures and practices.
In communication situations related to his/her field the student
• Masters varied and demanding general and specialised professional communication situations
• Produces clear and detailed texts appropriate for the situation
• Is an active participant in professional communication situations and allows for the requirements of the situation. Speaks fluently and effortlessly and takes the conversation partner in account
• Uses technical and general terminology as well as grammatical structures diversely and almost without errors
• Pronounces clearly, with a natural sentence rhythm.

Qualifications
The acquisition of professional language and communication competence in the second domestic language (Swedish) requires the starting level B1.1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Further information
The course of Finnish as a second language is obligatory for the students of Degree Programmes whose language of school education is not Finnish and who have been exempted from Swedish studies.
