Objective

Internal medicine, 1ects. Students familiarize themselves with the common internal conditions prevalent in Finland, their aetiology, symptoms, examinations and care from the perspective of their profession. Students understand the role of their professional education as part of the prevention and a wide range of rehabilitation services of the national diseases prevalent in Finland.
Gerontology and geriatrics, 1 ects. Students are familiar with the basic concepts of gerontology and geriatrics. They understand the changes in functional capacity related to ageing and the most common disorders. Students are familiar with the major theories on ageing and understand the central biological and psychological questions related to it. Students apply their acquired knowledge and skills of their field of study to the care of the ageing and their physical abilities. Students consider the special features of gerontological disorders in their work.
Palpation and sonopalpation 1 ects. By means of manual palpation, students can detect and perceive the structures and compositions of the body, serving as a basis for the examination. Sonopalpation enables the students to examine tissues difficult to reach by manual palpation, such as deep muscles and fasciae using the ultrasound and EMG (electromyography) techniques.
Symptoms & Signs 1 ects
Students have the theoretical competence in an independent patient examination. Students recognize the major illnesses requiring further treatment. They familiarize themselves with the major symptoms and aetiology of the most significant illnesses implemented as clinical practice of the examinations.
Students are well aware of other health care professions (e.g. physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropodists, occupational therapists) and their duties and responsibilities regarding safe patient care.
Neurology 1 ects. Students are familiar with the basics of pathophysiology of the major neurological disorders in Finland, their major symptoms and clinical examination practices. Students understand the basic models of neurological treatment and the importance of preventing neurological disorders. Students understand the significance of their profession as part of the current neurological rehabilitation practices.

Content

Internal medicine, 1ects. Basic mechanisms of cardiovascular, gastroenterological, respiratory, urological diseases and diabetes as well as the main features of their diagnostics and care. Gerontology and geriatrics 1 ects. Gerontology and geriatrics as fields of science. Basics of the theories of ageing. Major tissue changes in different organ systems. Health challenges of the ageing population and the social impact of ageing. Decrease on the functional capacity of the elderly in different organ systems and their detection. Possibilities for care of the ageing population. Palpation and sonopalpation 1 ects. Perceiving body structures and compositions by manual palpation. Real time ultrasound of tissues difficult to examine manually. Imaging of movement and controlling supportive tissues with ultrasound. Symptoms & Signs 1ects. Vascular and lymphatic symptoms and their examination/testing. Neurological symptoms and their examination/testing. Respiratory symptoms and their examination/testing. Examinations/testing of other symptoms. Red flags, yellow flags. Neurology 1 ects. Different types of pain, acute and chronic pain. Headache, dizziness and paralysis. Disorders related to sensory organs, their examinations and care. Disorders related to mobility, their examination and care. Cerebral dysfunctions.

Sisällöt opiskellaan omina kokonaisuuksia. Kaikkiin kuuluu luennot ja seminaari. Seminaari on pakollinen opintojakson suorituksen ja arvioinnin kannalta. Yhden kerran voi olla poissa luennoilta / sisältö.
