Objective

Students describe the operating environments of prosthetics and orthotics. They describe how the business strategy and vision guide decision-making and actions in the work community. Students work in a goal-oriented way with others in the work community. Students are familiar with the concepts of lifelong learning and reflection as well as understand their significance to one’s work and professional growth. Students evaluate the quality of their work and its effectiveness. Students adapt to the work community and its ways and are also familiar with the job description and tasks of their supervisors. Students are familiar with the collective labour agreement and other agreements, guidelines and local practices determining work. Students describe factors affecting welfare at work maintaining their own wellbeing.

Professional English 1ects. Students communicate fluently and effectively in English in their studies and at work. They can also use English to develop their professional skills. Students communicate in a natural way in both oral and written communicative situations of the field. They are able to consider the special features arisen in different situations and various cultural and linguistic starting points. Students can acquire, process, and mediate specific information of their own field both orally and in writing using different sources. During the studies, students form both a positive and a realistic view of their linguistic and
communicative competence as well as the ability and motivation to develop their skills. The oral and written communication skills are the minimum of B2 defined by the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

•The course of Professional English in Prosthetics and Orthotics focuses on the following themes requiring oral and written skills:

•Central concepts and terms
•Texts and documents
•Seeking, processing, applying and forwarding data
•Professional organizations, working environments, tasks, processes and tools
•Education and career planning within prosthetics and orthotics
•Self-evaluation of linguistic and communication skills and developing learning strategies

Students use the appropriate core concepts as well as make choices using the knowledge base of their own professional field. They recognise the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions.
Students’ actions follow the rules and instructions given, and they use working methods appropriately and safely.
Students work according to the professional ethics of their own field, and they act responsibly as group members.
In communication situations related to their field the students
• trust their communication skills to manage professional communication events using inquiries and relatively short speech acts
• understand the communication partner enough to be able to act and verbalize in accordance with the task in question
• express their thoughts simply, mainly coherently, and relatively understandably, even if there may be deficiencies in professional terminology and structural inaccuracies, which may interfere with full understanding
• draw up simple, formatted texts independently and extensive texts using linguistic aids

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students analyse the relationships between appropriate core concepts as well as justify their choices using the knowledge base of their own professional field. They analyse the prerequisites and consequences of their own actions.
Students act according to the rules and instructions given in their operating environment, and they use working methods appropriately and safely.
Students work according to the professional ethics of their own field, and they act flexibly as group members.
In communication situations related to their field the students
• trust their communication skills to manage in the professional context in line with the objectives set for the task
• exchange ideas as equal partners with independent language users
• take the initiative in professional discourse and can, to some degree, take into account participants’ cultural and language backgrounds and the demands of the context
• express themselves promptly in a clear and detailed manner
• use professional terminology to the point
• pronounce English clearly with matching stress and intonation
• produce texts for different purposes, where linguistic inaccuracy does not interfere with understanding

Students act initiatively and goal-orientedly in diverse operating environments, and they apply working methods appropriately and safely.
Students work according to professional ethics in varied situations, and their functioning enhances group activities.
In communication situations related to their field the students
• trust their communications skills to allow them to take initiative in communication events following the discourse practice of the field
• interact clearly and fluently as equal partners with a proficient speaker
• take initiative also in demanding professional communications where participants’ cultural and language backgrounds need to be taken into account
• express themselves effectively and accurately
• use professional terminology to the point
• pronounce English clearly, with stress and rhythm matching the total message
• have the ability to produce several genres, which are clear, well structured, and effective
