Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be able to talk or read about, and write brief texts about his/her background, home and working day, and understand simple clearly spoken Finnish in very familiar everyday situations. The student has an understanding of Finnish culture and the sights of his or her place of study. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skills level A1.2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF).

Content

- oral and written communication in simple everyday situations and daily routines: meeting people, eating and shopping, course of the day
- key vocabulary and phrases
- basic structures such as verb inflection in the present tense, ownership structure, and partitive
- basic features of the Finnish language and culture

White, Leila (2012): From Start to Finnish.
A short course in Finnish (chapters 1?12)
+ other materials provided by the teacher

Teaching methods

The course offers students basic knowledge of the Finnish language needed in everyday life. We'll learn how to introduce yourself, how to do shopping, how to find places and how to make small talk with the Finns for instance.

The student has achieved the course objectives fairly. Student will be able to identify, define and use the course subject area’s concepts and models. The student understands the criteria and principles of the expertise development.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has achieved the course objectives well, even though the knowledge and skills need improvement on some areas. Student is able to define the course concepts and models and are able to justify the analysis. The student is able to apply their knowledge in leisure, study and work situations. The student understands the importance of expertise in the field of business and is able to analyze his/her own expertise.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course with excellent marks. Student masters commendably the course subject area’s concepts and models. Student is able to make justified and fluent analysis and to present concrete development measures. The student is well prepared to apply their knowledge in leisure, study and work situations. Student is able to analyze the business sector expertise and the development of his/her own expertise.

Assessment methods and criteria

On a scale of 1?5 / fail. The grade consists of attendance, assignments and active participation in class. Written exam at the end of the course.
