Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be familiar with business planning to be able to plan his/her business activities and/or to be able to act as a member of management in a goal-oriented way.
The student will be familiar with demands of both written and oral expert communication, and with the basics of data acquisition. The student will be able to both write and create a presentation about his/her own field. The student will be able to evaluate his/her competence and give feedback to others
The student will be able to act appropriately in both working life and entrepreneurship-related communication situations. He/she will understand the importance of interpersonal communication and the atmosphere at the work place for working motivation. The student will be familiar with the practices of team work and master the basics of project communication. He/she will take the requirements of the recipient, situation and field into account. and be able to communicate in an analyzed, understandable and convincing way. The student will be willing to develop his/her Finnish and communication skills as part of his/her professional ability.

Content

The course deals with e.g. stakeholders, and the role of entrepreneurship in the national economy. Starting point analysis, business plans and business ideas are also be discussed. Goals and strategies, strategic and operational planning, operational policies as well as budgeting are covered. Business culture and values in running an organization as well as comparisons between different business forms are a part of the course.
Basic communication situations in working life: exploring and analysing interpersonal communication situations, negotiation and meeting practices, conflict situations, customer community, project work and team work, basics of internal and external information, professional literacy, media monitoring and designing hand-outs, argumentation skills, writing, presenting and visualizing one's own expert texts

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has often been absent from the teaching sessions. Activity during the teaching sessions and rehearsals has been unsatisfactory. The student's participation in community interactions is limited and he/she has problems in acting as a group member.
The student has a difficulty in understanding the basic principles of business, economy and national structures as well as in business terminology.
The student identifies the elements of the communication process and the partners of
communication. He/she can write simple messages and participate in interactive situations, but in spite of instruction the student has difficulties in data acquisition and the critical processing of data.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has taken part in all teaching sessions and projects and his/her activity on the course has been good. The student acts flexibly as a group member.
The student understands the basic principles of business and economy and he/she has the ability to use correct business-related terminology.
The student can evaluate his/her own communication skills and form communicative development goals. The student is goal-oriented in interactive situations and familiar with the role of internal and external communication of the community. He/she listens, observes and interprets messages appropriately.
The student communicates as an expert in a structured, understandable and interesting way and
targets messages to the recipient according to the situation. The student can justify his/her views. The student can acquire information on his/her own field of study and can use it critically. The student is able to prepare a goal-oriented written, oral or visual presentation for a target audience. The student takes advantage of his/her knowledge on text types and language.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the course objectives fully. The student has taken actively and constructively part in the teaching and the project. The student’s actions enhance the group activities.
The student understands business and economy and relates actively and innovatively to the business opportunities offered, and he/she can apply the course topics to entrepreneurial ways of thinking.
The student is willing and able to develop his/her Finnish language and communication skills as a part of his/her expertise and is able to communicate in a meaningful, creative and personal way. The student can use means of communication in a creative and appropriate way and takes advantage of different channels and tools. The student argues his/her point with skill and shows, shares and develops his/her expertise in the community.
The student retrieves information independently and competently in order to produce new knowledge or new perspectives. The student uses language creatively and according to field practices.
