Rehabilitation practitioners need to reform the field's model of service provision, demonstrate the effectiveness of their own work and intensify adoption and use of technology. It is important to provide the Helsinki Metropolitan Area with diverse curative and preventive rehabilitation services. The challenge for rehabilitation is to improve the position of clients by creating inclusive procedures. This requires solutions to be found from the resources of individuals and their local communities as well as development of living conditions and environments together with each client.
Within the Degree Programme, rehabilitation is perceived in terms of an individual, collective and societal change process. The key aspects of such a change process are the client's benefit, professional practice building on common interfaces and development-oriented leadership and management. The ageing population, the increase in the number of social and health care clients with multiple problems and various problems with working and functional capacity represent significant challenges from the perspective of the population's health and well-being. A specific need in the rehabilitation field is to develop rehabilitation services for the ageing workforce, long-term unemployed people, young people at risk of social exclusion, people with severe disabilities in all age groups, people with mental and/or substance abuse problems, and elderly people.
The field of rehabilitation offers diverse work assignments, which require research-oriented development, leadership and management competencies. Those graduating from the Degree Programme can find positions in various development, expert and managerial assignments within their field. The field offers job opportunities in the public, private and third sectors alike.
Planning and implementation of studies are based on joint development efforts involving students, teachers and representatives from the world of work. The purpose is to create learning situations that aim at authenticity. These will enable students to outline complex and manifold changes in the world of work as part of management and development of rehabilitation services. In addition to diverse contacts with the world of work, another resource for training is the students? prior work experience. By nature, studies focus on consolidation of and reflection on individual and collective competence.
The Finnish-language degree title is determined according to each student?s prior degree, affixed with the abbreviation YAMK (from the Finnish term for higher polytechnic degree). At Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, students on the Degree Programme in Rehabilitation may complete one of the following degrees: Master of Health Care (Orthotist-Prosthetist, Physiotherapist, Podiatrist, Osteopath, Registered Nurse, Public Health Nurse, or Occupational Therapist); Master of Social Services and Health Care (Geriatric Nurse); or Master of Social Services.
Students will work in close collaboration with representatives from the world of work throughout their training process. Studies are implemented as blended learning. Learning situations consist of seminars, on-line studies and learning assignments carried out individually and in teams, as well as expert presentations. Instruction methods include individual, group and peer instruction.
Metropolia University of Applied Sciences has established a partnership-based collaboration network with Arcada, Lahti and Laurea Universities of Applied Sciences. The partner institutions have planned the contents and implementation of education together and their teachers participate in implementation of studies. Arcada University of Applied Sciences is specifically responsible for instruction for Swedish-speaking students.
