Objective
- Student will identify speciality of objects of indegenious people and its context and effects on chosen conservation method.
- Student will be able to take into account the integrity and context of indegenious objects and their effect in conservation work.
- Student will understand the interaction of different materials and causes for degradation, and minimize the possible risks in conservation.
- Student will be able to apply her/his earlier learned skills and knowledge to practical conservation work.
- Student will master several conservation methods and will be able to implement conservation independently.
- Student will understand the meaning of independent research, and is able to carry out an independent research.
- Student will be able to identify (by visual examination and with microscope) different types of leather and skin.
- Student will know different leather manufacturing processes and different tanning methods.
- Student will know the history of use and manufacturing of leather.
- Student will be able to identify different deterioration mechanisms of leather.
- Student will know materials and methods used in leather conservation.
- Student will be able to conserve simple leather artefacts and take into consideration the specific requirements of leather as material and the requirements caused by historic manufacturing processes.
- Student will understand the meaning and importance of aseptic working methods and she/he will be able to assess possible microbes or insects found in museum objects and environments.
- Student will be able to assess treatments targeted to museum objects and environments in order to eliminate microbes and insects.
- Student will know and be able to identity textile insects and other insects pests, and she/he will be able to prevent them.
- Student will know several preventive methods to disinfect textiles and other objects in museum and other environments.
Content
- Materials used for manufacturing ethnographic textiles, their damages and basic conservation methods and practical conservation
- Other materials than textile incorporated in textile objects, such as paper, metals, beads, glass, etc., and their effect on textile
- The nature and meaning of ethnographic objects and their impact on conservation
- Ethical and philosophical issues and their effect in conservation of ethnographic objects
- Deepening of one’s expert skills both manually and theoretically
- Different leather materials, manufacture of leather and skin, tanning methods
- Deterioration of leather
- Impact of manufacturing methods and environmental factors on leather and its deterioration
- Basics of leather conservation
- Possibilities of reshaping of deformed leather, consolidation and repair techniques and materials of leather
- Classification of micro organisms, their basic xxx and the main pests found in museums
- Living environments of microbes and reasons for their growth
- Micro biological working methods and their application in conservation
- Insects in museum collections and their prevention
- Inactivation of microbes and mold, their disinfection and removal
- Freezing of textiles and other objects

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student has a lot of absences from the teaching sessions. Activity during the teaching sessions and learning assignments is unsatisfactory. The student has problems in acting as a group member.
The capacity to formulate relevant problems associated with the work is limited and therefore the student has problems to apply theoretical studies to a practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal works is faint and the student has many gaps in former studies.
The student does not work independently and there is a lot of need for teacher’s further guidance. Student has not given enough attention for the subject and the result of the course is unbalanced. The student needs a lot of training in his/her manual skills.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student has taken part to all of the teaching sessions and learning assignments and the activity for the course is good. The student acts flexibly as a group member.
The studies proceed coherently. The student is able to understand the basic motifs of the course and is able to apply theoretical studies to practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal works is competent and the student understands causes and consequences of one's choice.
The student works independently but there is still need for teacher’s further guidance. The student has given enough attention for the subject and the result of the course is balanced. The student has good manual skills required in textile conservation.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The course objectives have been achieved in a competent manner. the student has taken actively and constructively part to the teaching and learning assignments. The student’s function enhances group activities.
The student masters the motifs of the course and prerequisites and is able to apply theoretical studies to a practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal works is professional and the student can validate causes and consequences of one's choice.
The student works independently enough. The student is able to master the whole of subject both in theory and practice. The student has an excellent manual skills required in textile conservation.

The study module is implemented as a project based learning. Idea is learning through making the practical work. Student has a role as an investigative learner.
