Descriptions

The Media Department includes three degree programs - Film and Television, Live Performance Engineering & Media and Communication - where students follow individual learning paths. The core curriculum for media majors includes courses in academic and learning skills, languages, entrepreneurship and preparation for the final project. Then students follow the learning path of their major, but the structure of the curriculum and the timing of classes enable interdisciplinary courses and projects between them.
The starting point of the learning pathway is professional competencies. The main method is project-based learning, which enables close collaboration with industry partners. In addition to internships, the degrees include several industry-linked projects.
All learning paths include a 30 credit module of multidisciplinary courses that deepens and/or broadens students’ professional skills and at least a 10 credit module of elective courses. It includes a number of specialization courses.
The elective and alternative courses facilitate the credit transfer of courses completed, for example, in an international student exchange program. Students can do their internships in Finland or abroad, and the language courses are integrated with professional courses in order to support international and multicultural skills.
In their last year of study, students complete an independent industry-related project and write a research report on it. The final project may also include an artistic or practical project, performance or documentation. The project can be carried out by a group of two or more students.

Development

The curriculum has been devised in a team with faculty members from all degree programs and professional majors. The objective was to create joint principles for the curricula of all media degrees. The content development process took into consideration the feedback given by students and industry partners, such as the members of the Advisory Council.
