Objective
After completing the study unit, students
• understand the special features of paediatric emergency care.
• identify and understand the phases of growth and development of children, young people and families as well as the factors, resources and major health changes affecting them.
• develop competence in identifying, evaluating and treating abnormalities in reference to the basic vital signs of children and young people.
• can treat acutely ill children and children with long-term illnesses in cooperation with the child, young person and family.
• can evaluate and treat children and young persons’ pain.
• can implement medication of children and young people of different ages safely.
• can provide patient education to children, young people and their families.
Content
Child as an emergency care patient
Preparing a child for examinations and procedures
Development and growth of children and young persons of different ages
Supporting families in children’s treatment and emergency care situations
Assistance and patient education of acutely ill child or young person (e.g. patient with respiratory distress or infection)
Assistance and patient education of children or young persons with a long-term illness
Pain management and patient education related to it
Nutrition, fluid treatment and medication and their patient education
Paediatric basic life support and in-hospital resuscitation
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Students develop their competence in the identification, evaluation and treatment of abnormalities related to vital signs, and they know how to treat acutely ill and long-term child patients in cooperation with the child, young person and family. Students can administer medication of children and young people of different ages safely.
