Descriptions

The objective of the Degree Programme in Oral Hygiene is to educate oral hygienists who
An oral hygienist's individual and collaborative expertise is seen in his/her professional competence, social and interactive skills, the use of his/her personality as a working tool, decision-making skills and in his/her ethical and soft approach (cf. Metsämuuronen 2001). The societal task of an oral hygienist is to influence the promotion of well-being of the population by participating in the oral heath care of the client, his/her significant others and community. Furthermore, the expertise is defined by being innovative and being able to develop his/her competence. The oral hygienist works as an expert in oral health care in either public or private social and health care sector.

Becoming an oral hygienist is directed by an expansive learning view. The term refers to collaborative learning in which the educational institution, the student and working life form a triangle to learn together about the problem solving skills required by continuous changes in learning and working environment. The curriculum of the degree programme in oral hygiene is based on nursing science. The essential concept that guides the learning is evidence-based oral health care. Becoming a collaborative expert is an integration of theoretical knowledge, studies in simulated learning environment and oral health care with patients. Moreover, the expertise in oral hygiene requires planning and implementation of development projects together with working life (Figure 1.). To develope into this kind of collaborative and expansive expert is directed by the learning strategies of the degree programme. These are the strategies of health promotion clinical and therapeutic oral health care and the strategies of international and multicultural oral health care. Tutoring, personal study plans and portfolios support the growth towards collaborative expertise in a multi-professional working environment.

Fifty-five (55) ECTS credits of the clinical practice takes place at the oral health care teaching clinic at Helsinki Polytechnic where the student treats clients of different ages. Twenty (20) credits of the clinical practice takes place in clinical practice placements of social and health care sector. At the oral health care teaching clinic, oral hygienist students will learn oral health care of children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. They will develop their collaborative skills in working life, especially focusing on health care centres in Helsinki, the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Helsinki and the personnel of these units, and with other students. Health promotion and oral health care of the elderly and long-term patients is developed together with the health care sector of Helsinki and the degree programme in oral hygiene. During their clinical practice, students will participate in development projects. As future members of multi-professional teams, oral hygienist students need evidence-based information about the client, health promotion, oral health care, its working environment and development.

Development

Opetussuunnitelman kehittäminen yhdessä työelämän ja opiskelijoiden kanssa

Neuvottelukunta on korostanut mm. moniasiantuntijuuteen perustuvan kehittämisosaamisen tärkeyttä tulevaisuuden suun terveydenhuollossa.
