User Centered Design ProjectLaajuus (5 ECTS)

Objective

The student is able to apply a user-centered design process in software development. The student is able to evaluate the usability, performance and ease of learning of user interfaces. The student acquires an ability to design and implement ergonomic, user-friendly web applications taking into account human-centered design principles and accessibility requirements. The knowledge can be applied in creating API based, mash-up applications.

Content

Ergonomics of computer and mobile user interfaces, responsive design principles, usability, and performance. Human information processing and computer system interfaces. User-centered design process and design patterns.
Project on web programming interfaces and big data using user centered design principles.

Basic studies in IT and programming.

Usability:

- is able to make expert evaluations of applications
- is able to create prototypes and use them in an application
User interface design patterns:
- knows design patterns for responsive applications

Usability:
- understands human cognition and is able to apply this knowledge to system evaluation
- has knowledge of the difference between usability and accessibility
User-centered design methods
- is able to make usability studies
- is able to use user testing in application design
Acts as an active development team member.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Usability:
- is able to apply user test results in describing work flows and make improvements to user interfaces and user interaction
- understands the importance of user experience design
User-centered design methods
- is able to select appropriate methods for usability studies and perform tests
- masters the user-centered design process
User interface design patterns:
- is able to create responsive design solutions in a team project.
