RetouchingLaajuus (5 ECTS)

Objective

This course will provide the student with knowledge of the history of different retouching techniques and materials. Upon completion the student is able to select the most suitable retouching method for his/her conservation project taking into account the ethical and aesthetical aspect of the object under treatment.

Students are able to use suitable retouching materials and techniques in practice and perform good quality retouching both ethically and aesthetically.

After completing this course the student will have basic knowledge of colour theory and how to apply this knowledge in practice.

Content

The course will include both theoretical and practical aspects of retouching. The theoretical part of the course will cover the history and ethics of retouching as well as colour theory.
The practical part will cover issues such as ethical aspects related to retouching and different retouching techniques and materials. Students are also required to carry out small retouching exercises using different materials and retouching techniques.


Synthetic and natural materials used in retouching are taught in theory. As a practical exercise students are making small retouching samples using various materials and techniques. Practical retouching work, using suitable materials and techniques is carried out on an object under conservation treatment.
The course will contain shorter, project-type modules.

Kokonaisuus ei ole tasapainoinen. Opiskelija ei täysin pysty hahmottamaan kurssin perusajatusta eikä sen vuoksi pysty täysin soveltamaan oppimaansa käytännön työhön. Harjoitustyöt on suoritettu tyydyttävästi. Työskentely ei ole ollut itsenäistä.

Hyvä ja tasapainoinen kokonaisuus. Asiat etenivät opintojaksolla johdonmukaisesti. Opiskelija hahmottaa opintojaksolla opetetut perusideat ja osaa soveltaa oppimaansa käytännön työhön sekä osaa selittää asiantuntevasti tehtyjen toimenpiteiden ja materiaalien valinnat, syyt ja seuraukset.

The student has restricted knowledge or has not coherently demonstrated theoretical and methodological insight. The capacity to formulate the relevant problems associated with the work is limited, little independence and critical evaluation is demonstrated. Where relevant the practical work is below a satisfactory standard or insufficient.
