Objective
he students can explain the principles and modes of heat transfer and apply them in heat transfer calculations of a plane, a pipe and a heat exchanger. They can explain how moisture transfers in structures and soil. The students recognize properties of building materials and factors related to corrosion. They are able to design and balance HVAC networks and choose pumps an fans. They can explain the principles of sound and apply them in noise calculations of HVAC systems.
Content
Building physics and chemistry (5 ECTS): Vapour diffusion, penetration of humidity in structures and soil, insulation of condensation and diffusion. Damped harmonic oscillator. Properties of materials, corrosion. Basics of sound, ultrasound, dependence of distance in sonic wave, intensity level and decibel scale, summation of intensity levels.
Heat transfer and fluid dynamics (8 ECTS): Heat transfer of plane wall and cylinder, thermal resistance and overall heat transfer coefficient, temperature distribution in a multilayered plane wall or a cylindrical system, convection correlations and their validity, heat exchangers, logarithmic mean temperature difference, conductance, radiation exchange between surfaces and view factors.
Pipe network pressure losses, buoyancy circulation, dimensioning and hydronic balancing of distribution networks, dimensioning of pump and fan.
Designing and dimensioning networks (heating, water supply, ventilation) in a detached house using design tools.
Targets for indoor environment and ventilation air flows.
Mathematics (2 ECTS): Mathematics related to the contents of the course.
