Objective

The student knows the special features of the different microbiology classes. S/he recognizes the presence of both harmful and useful microbes in different environments; in food production, environmental and industrial environments and applications. Factors affecting the growth of microbial communities, and their management, are familiar to her/him. He has the basic knowledge of how to identifying microbes.
The student is able to work aseptically and master the basic microbiological working methods. S/he understands the differences in hygiene levels, and the requirements for applying them in different industrial processes.

Content

1. Classification of microorganisms from a biotechnical view
2. Identification of different microbial groups, including microscopical methods
3. Growth techniques, measuring of growth
4. Aseptic work and sterilization techniques
5. The presence of microbes in different environments and their exploitation for different purposes
