Objective

The student knows and recognizes biomolecules, their functional groups and their ability to bond and form linkages.

He/she understands how organic biomolecules form compounds and their features. He/she is able to recognize eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and their features. The student understands the function and regulation of genes in cells.

After completing the course the student understands the presence of microbes almost everywhere. S/he is aware of the different cell types and microbial cells as well as their main features.

Content

1. The main organic compounds; nomenclature, isomerism, common properties and reaction mechanisms.
2. Structure, characteristics and function of the biomolecules (lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins, nucleic acids).
3. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their structure. Microbial classification and main features of different microbial groups.
