Objective
On completion of the course the student has the following skills and knowledge.
MATHEMATICS:
The student can
• use a calculator
• compute the value of a given physical expression
• solve simple equations and pairs of equations
• perform calculations related to VAT, loan and interest rate and raising to a power
• work with logarithmic and exponential functions
• work with sequences and series.
PHYSICS:
The student can
• apply logarithmic and exponential functions to practical problems
• apply arithmetic and geometric sequences to practical problems
• explain the concept of energy
• define work, kinetic energy, potential energy, power and efficiency
• present the principle of conservation of energy and the work-energy principle
• model energy conversion and transfer
• present and apply the definitions of density and pressure
• describe the effects of pressure in fluids
• present the principle of the hydraulic lever
• calculate fluid pressure at difference depths
• present and apply Archimedes’ principle
• define the basic flow quantities and use them
• study changes in flow velocity using the equation of continuity
• work with temperature scales
• model and apply laws of thermal expansion
• present the ideal gas law and use it to model gas behaviour.
