Objective

The student appreciates the role of mechanics as the conceptual and historical basis of all scientific knowledge.
The student acquires conceptual understanding on curvilinear planar motion and learns how to analyse such motion in detail using vector calculus.
The student learns to recognize and model forces (interactions) that appear in common practical circumstances, and learns how to determine the effects of such forces using the equations of motion for mechanical systems.
The student understands the concepts of mechanical work, energy and power and learns how to apply the principle of energy conservation.
The student becomes familiar with the basic concepts of thermal physics, perceives the connection between thermal physics and mechanics, and acquires an understanding of basic phenomena related to heat and temperature. n completion of the course, the student has a basic understanding of the structure of matter and of the crude classification of materials to conductors and dielectrics. The student learns to visualize electrical phenomena and issues related to electrical safety. The student learns the significance and precise definitions of the basic concepts of electricity – electric charge, voltage, electric current and resistance. The student learns to describe the electrical forces using electric fields, and recognises the basic equations that relate the fields to distributions of electric charges. The student learns the principle of operation and several technical applications of a capacitor. The student learns to solve problems dealing with simple direct current circuits.
