Objective

The objective of the Bachelor’s Thesis is for the student to develop and demonstrate the ability of applying professional skills and knowledge to a practical assignment.
In Metropolia’s Bachelor’s Thesis, the student learns and carries out development work, which is based on researched and other evidence. Development work refers to developing one's professional competence or practices.
On completion of the Bachelor’s Thesis the student will be able to
• identify questions and needs for development in the professional field and the work life and to plan solutions accordingly
• use reliable information from various sources when outlining one's work
• apply professional skills and knowledge and use appropriate methods
• execute a development project useful for the work life or the profession in an independent, responsible and collaborative manner
• communicate clearly, justify and illustrate one's solutions to peers and different audiences.
• report the results of one's work, assess them and bring up suggestions for development in writing, orally, and visually

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Planning and executing the thesis
- The student can follow the plan and schedule under guidance.
Applting theory and appropriate methods:
- The student can acquire information in the field to build up a theoretical background for the study
- The student needs guiding to select the appropriate methods to reach the goals of the work.
Gaining results and their significance:
- The student reaches some of the goals of the work and they are to some extent relevant to the professional field.
Usability and feedback from the client:
- The student reaches results which are partially usable by the client.
Conclusions, critical evaluation:
- The student can draw some conclusions from the results of the work.
Written report and oral presentation:
- The student can prepare an understandable thesis report using the language guidelines, layout template and instructions.
- The student can present the work orally and communicate in an appropriate way

Planning and executing the thesis:
- The student can create the plan and schedule and follow it through.
Applying theory and appropriate methods:
- The student can acquire information in the field to build the theoretical background for the study.
- The student can select the appropriate methods to reach the goals of the work independently and can justify them.
Gaining results and their significance:
- The student reaches the main goals of the work and they are relevant to the professional field.
Usability and feedback from the client:
- The student reaches results which can be applied by the client.
Conclusions, critical evaluation:
- The student can make correct and justified conclusions from the results of the work and can reflect on them critically.
Written report and oral presentation:
- The student can prepare a thesis report with an appropriate content and style of presentation. The student can focus the presentation to the reader and its context and can write fluently using the language guidelines. The student can structure the report clearly and logically.
- In the oral presentation the student can communicate in appropriate way and illustrate the speech in multiple ways.

Planning and executing the thesis:
- The student can create the plan and schedule and follow it independently.
Applying theory and appropriate methods:
- The student structures the theory to support practise. The student uses multiple fresh sources of information.
- The student can select the appropriate methods to reach the goals of the work and can justify them in a convincing way.
Gaining results and their significance:
- The student reaches the goals of the work. The student has solved a significant technical problem or produced new, significant information to the professional field.
Usability and feedback from the client:
- The student reaches results which are widely usable by the client.
Conclusions, critical evaluation:
- The student can make correct and justified conclusions from the results of the work and can reflect on them critically. The conclusions show the writer's own, new and interesting approach to the professional field.
Written report and oral presentation:
- The student can prepare a professional, fully finalised thesis report with an appropriate style of presentation. The student writes as a professional of the field in an illustrative and interesting way. The student can structure the report in an innovative and clear way.
- In the oral presentation the student can communicate as an expert of the field in an illustrative, interesting way using visual presentation tools.
