Objective
On completion of the course, the student will understand how forces act on particles and rigid bodies. The student will be able to calculate the forces and moments acting on statically determinate particles, rigid bodies and structures in equilibrium.
The student will understand that loads create internal forces and couples. The student will be able to calculate the internal forces and moments and present force and moment diagrams.
Content
1. Vectors
2. Force, moment, couple
3. Equivalent systems of forces, centre of gravity, distributed forces
4. Free body diagram
5. Equations of equilibrium
6. Frames, machines, trusses
7. Internal forces and moments
8. Equilibrium in three dimensions
Evaluation scale
0-5
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student can solve basic equilibrium problems.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student can solve more difficult equilibrium problems. The student can calculate internal forces and moments in beams. The student can draw force and moment diagrams.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student can calculate forces between the members of structures. The student knows how to use equilibrium equations to calculate the reactions of three dimensional rigid bodies.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student can solve basic equilibrium problems.
