Objective

On completion of the course the student will be more confident in participating in familiar everyday communication situations. He or she starts to understand how to conclude the meaning of an unfamiliar word in short and simple texts of everyday life. He or she can describe him/herself and his/her family, living conditions, studies and job at present and in the past, in speaking and in writing. The student’s communication skills correspond to the skill level A2.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Content

Oral and written communication in everyday contexts: countryside and urban life, living environment, and Finland. New grammatical structures, for example expressing hypothetical and imaginary things, suggestions, wishes, requests and politeness, plural forms of nominal words, sentence types. The essential characters of colloquial Finnish.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to reply to questions in a simple conversation. The student is able to compose simple texts concerning everyday life. The student is able to identify expressions of polite requests and suggestions and plural forms in familiar texts. The student recognizes the most important features of colloquial Finnish.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to communicate understandably in a simple conversation in his or her turn, and he or she can further the conversation for example by asking questions and commenting on the subject. The student is able to understand texts concerning everyday life with the aid of a dictionary and to compose understandable texts on familiar topics. The student can apply simple familiar grammatical structures. The student understands basic features of colloquial Finnish.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to participate in simple conversations concerning familiar everyday topics both as a listener and as a speaker and even to promote interaction. The student’s speech is fairly clear and understandable. The student is able to understand short texts concerning everyday life with the aid of a dictionary, even when the topic is not related to his or her immediate environment. The student is able to apply the grammar he or she has learnt to new words and expressions. The student uses basic colloquial Finnish to some extend.
