Objective

On completion of the course, the student can design one or two way slabs, a soil supported slab, a wall, a wall like beam, stairs, footings, a beam subjected to torsion and retaining walls of reinforced concrete.
In addition to this the student can carry out the fire technical design of reinforced concrete by using tables. The student understands the principles of the strut-and-tie method. The student can make a building information model for an in-situ concrete structure and produce formwork and reinforcement drawings from it.

Content

1. Reinforced concrete slabs
2. Reinforced concrete walls
3. Reinforced concrete columns
4. Wall like beams
5. The design of a beam against torsion
6. Reinforced concrete footings and retaining walls
7. The fire design of reinforced concrete
8. The strut-and-tie method
9. Creating a building information model for a reinforced concrete structure.

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

On completion of the course the student can
- explain the behaviour of one and two way reinforced concrete slabs
- design (without problems) the principal and secondary reinforcement of a one way slab
- design the minimum reinforcement of a column
- design the reinforcement of a wall like beam
- explain the principles of design against punching
- explain how splitting forces are formed
- determine the load-bearing capacity of a column from tables
- create a building information model for a simple building with an in-situ reinforced concrete frame

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student can
- design a reinforced concrete beam that is subjected to torsion
- design a reinforced concrete column in ULS
- design usual reinforced concrete structures without problems e.g. one or two way slabs, slabs supported by soil, various footings and a retaining wall
- explain how splitting forces are formed, calculate the force in a given situation and design a structure against splitting force
- determine the fire-resistance period of reinforced concrete structures by using tables
- create a building information model for a building with an in-situ reinforced concrete frame in more demanding cases

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student can
- define the torsion moment diagram for a beam
- design (without problems) various reinforced concrete structures e.g. walls, slabs, wall like beams, footing structures, corbels
- design details of slab reinforcement, such as suspended reinforcement, structures with partially loaded areas and structures subjected to splitting
- make calculations for simple structures using the strut-and-tie method.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

On completion of the course the student can
- explain the behaviour of one and two way reinforced concrete slabs
- design (without problems) the principal and secondary reinforcement of a one way slab
- design the minimum reinforcement of a column
- design the reinforcement of a wall like beam
- explain the principles of design against punching
- explain how splitting forces are formed
- determine the load-bearing capacity of a column from tables
- create a building information model for a simple building with an in-situ reinforced concrete frame.
