Objective

Students will understand the phenomena related to disability, chronic illness and special education. They will identify the uniqueness of client groups and their special needs. Students know key fundamental concepts, legislation and services. They know the current debate related to practices in the area. They will be able to reflect on their own professional relationship related to the theme.

Content

Disability, chronic illness, and special difficulties and related special needs. Experiencing and encountering special needs. Finnish disability policy principles and challenges. Disability legislation as a safeguard for the fundamental rights of the individual. Guiding principles of organising special education and disability services.

Student can understand different phenomenas referring to disability and chronic illness.
Student is able to recognize different customer groups and can understand their different needs.
Student is capable to adapt essential law points, agreements and services as well as the main basic concepts.
Student can name methods and practices used in the fields of disability, chronic illness as well as special education.
Student can valuate and reflect ongoing discussion of the topic and he/she is capable to reflect his/her own professional work.

Essay and participation to contact lessons (60% of the grade).

Leading different -lives seminar; studyvisit and group presentation (40% of the grade)
Through visiting either mental health, substance abuse, disability or child protection services the students will become familiar with the variety of service providers, working methods and collaboration.
