Objective

Students
-familiarize themselves with the less common and more challenging emergency care cases
-understand the significance of underlying factors to acute traumas and illnesses in the advanced care of emergency care patients
-familiarize themselves with the surgical airway and understand the complications of demanding intubation in emergency care
-can describe emergency care services as part of authority cooperation
and know the principles of leadership in emergency care situations
-can assume the leadership role in emergency care services
-perceive the overall situation in the scene of accident
-are proficient in the multiple casualty triage process
-know the standard practices of different authorities in cooperation with each other and understand the significance of this cooperation to mass or multiple casualty incidents.
-can assume the leadership role in a situation requiring cooperation between authorities
-are proficient in the principles of communication in everyday work and unexpected situations as well as are familiar with the various tools of leadership
-are familiar with the duties related to medical, triage, treatment and transport management
-know the protocols of unexpected situations under normal circumstances and in exceptional circumstances in and outside of hospitals
-are familiar with functional models related to different types of accidents
identify criteria for initiating debriefing and defusing

Challenging airway control with intubation or surgical airway
Non-invasive use of ventilator and its use with intubated patients
Challenging and more complicating pharmacotherapy in emergency care
Anaesthesiology, Cardiology, Neurology, Traumatology, Pathophysiology
Legislation and communication regarding mass injury leadership
Basics of preparedness planning
Leading emergency care incidents
Triage in multiple casualty incidents
Cooperation between different authorities
Role and tasks of medical, triage, treatment and transport leaders as well as control of the overall situation in the scene of accident
Leadership in different types of accidents
Unexpected situations under normal circumstances and exceptional circumstances
Principles of debriefing and defusing

Content scheduling

EMS operative management first, then lab sessions related to that. After that, lecturer-led lectures. Airway-lab after those. Pediatric labs after pediatric lectures. Emergency delivery and labs. Simulations somewhere after labs.

Further information

All students are advised to join the OMA workspace "Ensihoidon valtakunnallinen tentti". All communication related to the national exam is done through that.
The advanced level emergency care module should be passed before attempting the national exam.

Assessment methods and criteria

The grade is decided based on the result of the national EMS exam. Active participation might affect the grade. Excellent performance in the simulation tests can affect the grade.
