Objective

Students will be able to work with a variety of elderly people of different functional capacity and to create interactive client relationships based on guidance. They will recognise the growth of professionalism in their own activity.
Students will learn the importance of physical, creative and group activity for the improvement of health and for the maintenance and recovery of functional capacity of the elderly. They will plan and realize goal-oriented and wide-ranging activities in various environments of elderly care in the metropolitan area. Students will apply different activating methods according to the special needs of the elderly. They will critically evaluate their own activity as well as the success of reaching its expected outcomes.
Students will identify the network of elderly care and clients’ service needs. They will be prepared to employ first aid and fire safety measures in emergency situations.

Content

Project work. Group work and directing. Methods of sociocultural and creative group work (i.e. music, reminiscing activities, drama, visual arts) for the promoting of community. Health exercise and guidance. Application of creative activity and health exercise, e.g. to support the functional capacity of elderly people with memory problems.
Internship at a rehabilitation, daytime or service centre (7 credits, includes first aid and fire safety training, 0.5 credits). Self-evaluation of professionalism and competence.

Opintojakson harjoittelu tehdään projektina. Projekti toteutetaan 2-3 henkilön ryhmissä työelämäyhteistyössä. Vaihtoehtoisesti opiskelijalla on mahdollisuus suorittaa työsuhteessa tapahtuva 22 päivän työharjoittelu, jota täydennetään laajalla kirjallisella tehtävällä. Opintojakson lähiopiskelu sisältyy molempiin suoritustapoihin. HUOM! Jos opiskelija haluaa suorittaa opintojakson tällä valinnaisella suoritustavalla, tulee opiskelijan olla yhteydessä opintojakson vastuuopettajaan heti opintojakson ilmoittautumisajan päätyttyä.
