Objective

- Student will know the history of upholstery and she/he will be able to identify upholstery techniques and materials used during different periods.
- Student will know different materials and techniques used in upholstered furniture during different time periods.
- Student will identify previous repairs and restorations in upholstery, and will be able to make decisions concerning removal of later restorations.
- Student will understand how to make a simple pad on a spring base.
- Student will be able to identify deterioration and its cause of upholstered furniture.
- Student will know how different materials have to be taken into consideration during conservation of an upholstered furniture.
- Student knows how to document, clean, conserve and restore an upholstered furniture and carry out the practical conservation work.

Teaching methods

Lecture, contact teaching, problem based learning, assignments, guided assignments, individual tutoring, independent work with literature.

Employer connections

Working life collaboration takes place through visits/or visiting lecturers and professional discussions. Objects for the study modules will be acquired through museums, institutuions and private clients.

The weekly working hours of a student is 1,5 credits which is equivalent to 40 hours of studies. 40 hours if formed from approx. 18 - 20 of contact studies with a lecturer. The remaining hours is spent by indipendent practical work or literature survey. 1 credit (cr) is equivalent to 27 hours (h).

During the study module the student should read up the given literature together with practical work and give a powerpoint presentation of a given subject.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Student has a lot of absences from the teaching sessions. Activity during the teaching sessions and learning assignments is unsatisfactory. Student has problems in acting as a group member.

The capacity to formulate relevant problems associated with the work is limited and therefore the student has problems to apply theoretical studies to a practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal works is faint and student has many gaps in former studies.

The student does not work independently and there is a lot of need for teacher’s further guidance. Student has not given a requisite amount of attention for the subject and the result of the course is unbalanced. Student needs a lot of training in his/her manual skills.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Student has taken part to all of the teaching sessions and learning assignments and the activity for the course is good. Student acts flexibly as a group member.

The studies proceed coherently. Student is able to understand the basic motifs of the course and is able to apply theoretical studies to a practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal works is competent and student understands causes and consequences of one's choice.

The student works independently but there is still need for teacher’s further guidance. Student has given enough attention for the subject and the result of the course is balanced. Student has good manual skills required in textile conservation.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The course objectives have been achieved in a competent manner. Student has taken actively and constructively part to the teaching and learning assignments. Student’s function enhances group activities.

Student masters the motifs of the course and prerequisites and is able to apply theoretical studies to a practical work. The reasoning of the rehearsal works is professional and student can validate causes and consequences of one's choice.

The student works independently enough. Student is able to master the whole of subject both in theory and practice. Student has an excellent manual skills required in textile conservation.

Assessment methods and criteria

Learning assignment 60 %, continuous assessment 40 %.
Assessment is based on continuous assessment of a student, attendance, practical conservation work and written conservation report and their assessment.

The study module is implemented as a project based learning. Idea is learning through making the practical work. Student has a role as an investigative learner.
