Objective

Students are familiar with various modeling software and methods and recognize the differences between software suites. Furthermore, students are able to choose the appropriate software needed to complete a given task. Students are able to transfer data between different systems. Students are proficient in the versatile and efficient use of modeling tools and familiar with the versatile applications of modeled data in manufacture, content production and design processes.

Content

The course includes a wide variety of 3D content production software, modeling techniques and ways to use modeling data. The software and methods students familiarise themselves with during this course are the basic tools used in later XR studies.

- CAD tools and CAID (computer aided industrial design)
- NURBS geometry, volumetric and surface modeling, parametric and associative modeling
- assemblies, configurations, PDM, technical drawings and documentation, sheet metal design, formwork, simulation
- rendering and animation in CAD environments
- transfering geometry between software, native and generic file formats
- using CAD-CAM data in production: additive and subtractive technologies (e.g. laser cutting, CNC machining and 3D printing)
- polygonal modeling: cameras, lighting, materials and texturing
- animation: keyframe animation, kinematics, particle and physics simulation, rendering and post production of animation
- importing CAD data (volumetric and surface models) to polygonal modeling software, exporting polygonal models to CAD environment

Location and time

Teaching is organized in the XR-Design class, 25.9. - 13.12.2019

Materials

The course focuses mainly on the 3DS MAX and Rhinoceros software, and a short introduction is given also to following software: Blender, Maya and SolidWorks.
We will also familiarize ourselves with the available online tutorials for the fore mentioned software.

Teaching methods

The course introduces you to various 3D modeling and rendering software and workflows for creating 3D models. Studies consist of lectures and course assignments.

Completion alternatives

The course can be passed also with the demonstration of sufficient 3D modeling skills and work samples.
