Metropolia University of Applied Sciences has three types of insurance for its students
- a valid accident insurance required by law for all currently enrolled students studying for a degree at Metropolia
- a voluntary accident insurance for those currently enrolled students who are included in the Finnish residence-based social security system (KELA)
- a voluntary travel insurance for those currently enrolled degree students who are included in the Finnish residence-based social security system (KELA)
The insurance is provided by the Protector Försäkring Insurance company. Please note that this insurance does not cover exchange students on exchange at Metropolia.
Accident Insurance Required by Law
The accident insurance required by law covers all currently enrolled students studying for a degree at Metropolia. The insurance covers accidents that happen when the student participates in manual practices during a course, a work placement in Finland or abroad, or whilst doing the Bachelor’s or Master’s Thesis. The insurance coverage is limited to accidents that happen at the institution or at other places appointed by the institution in Finland and abroad. The compensation is defined according to the accident insurance law.
Extended Accident Insurance
The extended accident insurance covers Metropolia students who are included in the Finnish social security system (KELA). The voluntary accident insurance compensates the above accidents as well as accidents that happen during other activities that are part of the curriculum (for example physical education, lunch breaks) and during the immediate journeys between Metropolia and home.
The insurance amounts are as follows:
- treatment expenses caused by an accident, 5.000 e
- permanent disability caused by an accident, 10.000 e
- death caused by an accident, 5.000 e
Voluntary travel insurance
Metropolia has a voluntary travel insurance which covers journeys students do as part of their studies.
All Metropolia students who are included in the Finnish social security system (KELA), studying both in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes and in daytime and evening studies, are covered by the insurance. The insurance is in effect for the entire period of the student’s studies but only during the academic years for which the student is actually enrolled.
In case of an accident the student can seek treatment from public or private health care. The student has to pay the costs of treatment and examination first oneself. After the insurance notice is done, the insurance company will make the decision about paying out the compensation. The student has to send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to get the notice done. The detailed information about the accident will be asked by email and Metropolia will make the insurance notice on behalf of the student.
In cases of accidents related to internship or practical learning (eg. in laboratory or workshop) the first visit to a medical centre will be charged straight from the insurance company. The student informs Metropolia about the accident and orders the insurance certificate which will be delivered to the medical centre by Metropolia.
